Who do you call when you need to get something? Postmates! That’s right. Gone are the days where you actually need to pick up stuff yourself. This on-demand delivery service will pick up or deliver almost anything for you. When you’re at work and only have 1 hour for lunch, you don’t want to be wasting that hour waiting in line at the place down the street. (Especially if you’re in the financial district - lunch lines are insane). Postmates will usually bring you your goods within 1 hour. And did I mention you can get anything picked up 24/7?
The logistics company has been around since 2011 and is a key player in today’s on-demand delivery scene. While I am aware of other delivery services such as DoorDash, Grubhub and UberEats, I think Postmates offer more than just food. That’s what I like about Postmates. Amazon Prime Now has recently become more popular, but I still like the idea that a Postmate would be able to pick up things like your dry-cleaning or even cigarettes and liquor. You can have anything picked up from any store that is open- even clothing stores, though usually food deliveries are the most common. Postmates is now in over 100 markets around the US. How does it work?
When you download the app, you are prompted to sign up and the stores/restaurants are listed on the home screen. You simply decide what you want to eat, and if it’s not listed, you’re able to type in the restaurant name and your order. Whichever place you decide on, Postmates calculates the distance between the restaurant and your delivery address, and that is the delivery fee. The farther you are away from the restaurant, the more expensive the delivery fee is.
Keep in mind, though the delivery fee does not count as tips for the courier. The tips are extra that you can pay through the app after you receive your food. Sometimes the delivery can take a bit longer depending on how busy the restaurant is, but on average I’ve had my food delivered to me within an hour. When you add food to your cart, you can also indicate any substitutions if your food isn’t available. When you place your order, you would be able to track the courier and his/her whereabouts!
Now I’ve had the experience of being a courier as well as a customer, so I can attest for both sides of the system. As a customer, I love that it is really convenient. I’ve gotten Korean food delivered to me at 3AM when I was too lazy to cook and I didn’t want to physically go to the restaurant. As a courier, I’ve picked up pregnancy tests for customers, I’ve picked up cough medicine and Apple products. The fact that a courier could pick up anything for you at any time is just awesome, really. The “pick up anything” component is what keeps me going back to Postmates every time.
One thing about Postmates that I am not particularly fond of is the price. It can get pretty steep if you live far away from a restaurant and have a huge order. The 9% service fee and delivery fee can add up. But Postmates has a list of partnered restaurants where delivery fee is only $3.99 - which is not a bad idea when you’re not really craving for anything in particular. Recently they came out with a subscription model where you pay $9 a month, and receive free deliveries over $25 throughout the month. Still pretty pricy to me, but if you’re somebody who always makes big orders, it could be worth it.
Based on my personal experience, Postmates is best for those who: A) Don’t have a means of reliable transportation B) Don’t have the time to get things yourself. I really like the service for what it is, and was pretty mind blown that you can get someone to basically run your errands for you. So next time when you’re stuck in your bathroom because you ran out of toilet paper, you’ll know exactly who to call!
