The most fun holiday of the year is coming up next week, and the excitement is so real. Halloween falls on a Monday this year, which gives you all the reasons to party (on a school night!!) Halloween has always been a fun break to my usual routine, but there were many times when I checked my bank account the next day and realize, Wow, did I really spend all my money on this lame costume that I will never wear again? And that doesn’t even include the price of events, covers, alcohol, and post-drunken munchies. It all adds up. Has this ever happened to you? Here are some ways on how to save money this Halloween! 1. Don’t get your costume at a mainstream party storeI’m talking about places like “Spirit Halloween Store” — which opens up pop up locations every year close to Halloween, and everybody flocks to it. While these mainstream party stores have a huge selection, you will most likely be paying a fortune. I suggest heading to thrift stores and looking for different pieces that can add to your costume. According to Google Trends, this year the top costume is Harley Quinn. And I assure you that if you bought that $50 Harley Quinn costume at Spirit, you will be looking like the 20 other Harley Quinns at the bar. Go to a dollar store for props and thrift stores for clothes, and your wallet will thank you. 2. Don’t buy candy (Until after Halloween)People buy candy by the bulk before Halloween, but the real secret is you should buy candy after Halloween. Most of the candy will be 30-50% off! If you really cannot wait until after Halloween, local businesses usually give candy out to young kids trick-or-treating. You’re probably not a kid, but it doesn’t hurt to ask nicely right? 3. Withdraw some cash and leave credit cards at homeHave a budget for your night, and only withdraw that much amount of cash. Leave the credit cards at home, so you won’t be tempted to spend it when you’re drunk. Now you won’t forget your credit card at the bar! 4. Go to lesser known barsYou will probably want to go to that big party headlined by that unknown DJ. And pay $60 to get in to the door. (That doesn’t even include drinks by the way). Unless it was a really big event headlined by a big artist, $60 is a lot of money. You can still have fun at a low-key bar, which there are many of that don’t charge any cover. Also check out Happy Hour Halloween specials around the city. There are also tons of free events around the city that doesn’t require spending any money at all, many of which only require that you have a costume. 5. Pre-drink before going outIf you can’t make it to a happy hour somewhere, buy your liquor elsewhere (that’s NOT the bar) and pre-drink before going out. This way, you won’t have to spend that much buying drinks at the bar, which can add up quickly.
So go ahead, channel your inner Harley Quinn, and enjoy your break without breaking your wallet! What are you going to be for Halloween?
